Module 1: Spoken Language

Description:

This model includes relevant topics and areas of instruction in the auditory learning of spoken language. Anatomy and physiology, normal sequence of development, teaching strategies and disorders in the domains of speech and language are covered.

Early Language: An Introduction to the Bloom and Lahey Model of Normal Language Development Phases 1-3

Dates: October 24-26, 2006
Fee: $270, plus a $50 materials charge for notebook that will be used for all three Bloom and Lahey courses

Description: This three-day workshop includes a one-day introduction to the Bloom and Lahey model of normal language development with the two remaining days devoted to the discussion of Phases 1, 2 and 3. Workshop topics include: eliciting and analyzing language samples using the Bloom and Lahey model, and planning appropriate language lessons based on the categories of the model and the needs of the child.

Workshop II: Reading and Literacy

Dates: December 11-12, 2006

Description: This two-day workshop will focus on literacy and reading for children that are deaf and hard-of-hearing. The agenda will include information on the current status of reading achievement, literacy learning, the development of narrative skills and the importance of reading aloud.

Spring 2007


Auditory Function/Auditory Verbal Techniques

Dates: January 17-19, 2007

Description: This Module provides detailed information on hierarchies, strategies and techniques that facilitate auditory learning of spoken language by children who are deaf or hard-of-hearing. The Module covers general knowledge in the areas of auditory function, listening as a process, hierarchies of auditory development and development of Auditory-Verbal lesson plans. It also identifies specific Auditory-Verbal techniques and strategies that allow parents and therapists to set up a listening environment and insures that children process successfully in each stage of auditory development. The formal and informal assessment of a listening function is also outlined with a view to developing short- and long-tern goals.

Expanding Language: Bloom and Lahey (Phases 3-6)

Dates: February 13-14, 2007

Description: A continuation of the Early Language workshop series where participants will gain familiarity with the contents of semantic categories in phases 4, 5 & 6 of the Bloom and Lahey model of language development. Workshop topics include analyzing language samples, planning intervention strategies and activities in conjunction with language expansion and increasing mean length utterance (MLU).

Complex Language

Dates: March 6-7, 2007

Description: This workshop is a continuation of the Early and Expanding Language workshops. Participants will gain familiarity with the content of semantic categories in phases 6, 7, and 8 of the Bloom and Lahey model of language development. Participants should bring their notebooks and handouts distributed from the Early Language and Expanding Language workshops.

Mainstreaming

Dates: February 26-27, 2007

Description: This Module discusses relevant topics and areas of instruction for mainstreaming students who are deaf or hard-of-hearing into regular classroom environments who use spoken language as the method of communication. The module examines the necessary components of a mainstreamed program for students ranging from preschool to secondary school through the following topics: historical overview of mainstreaming, program administration and case management, audiological management, A-V Therapy, in-service training and parent guidance.
